McLean Hall, St. George's School

Location: Vancouver, BC · Type: Institutional Interior · Year: Early 1990s

In the early 1990s, Soren Rasmussen was engaged by David McLean — the CN Rail chairman and philanthropist who spearheaded the project — to design the interior of McLean Hall at St. George's School in Vancouver.

The firm's portfolio described the commission simply: a large student dining hall, its interior designed to be reminiscent of a classical private school with contemporary touches, centred on a large wood-burning fireplace on the main end wall, visible to every student in the room.

For three decades the hall served as the school community's gathering and dining hall. St. George's own "Builders of St. George's School" tribute credits the commission with "raising the bar for philanthropy and redefining what our School can achieve."
